San Diego StartUp Week (SDSW) is one of the largest and most visible tech events to happen in San Diego throughout the year. What you might not have heard is that MindTouch will be hosting an ENTIRE day on Wednesday, June 21st on the Developer Track here at our Galactic HQ downtown (See San Diego StartUp Week video below).
MindTouch is not only hosting a full-day DevTrack, but sponsoring the entire week for San Diego StartUp Week. We believe that the San Diego startup community is vital to the economy, bridging tech and innovation as well as creating a place for collaborative growth. As MindTouch has grown from 4 employees to over 100 here in San Diego, we know what it is like to not only get support, but grow with the help of others. This makes it a no-brainer for our founders, Aaron Fulkerson (CEO) and Steve Bjorg (CTO), to continue to support the community in any way they can.

Participants are split into random teams of three to four to collaborate on a solution. We believe that team collaboration is the most fun way to make new discoveries, master new technologies, and make new friends!
Don’t forget to Tweet, push to LinkedIn, and share this with those you think would benefit.

Here is our current agenda for Wednesday 6/21 and below it are several ways you can share the word.
9:30–10:30 am Breaking into Tech – David Crean and Vlad Shut
Want to know what it takes to become a programmer? Have you been thinking about possibly attending a school or a developer bootcamp but are not sure what comes after that? Join MindTouch as we share our success stories, what made these candidates successful, and what you can expect if you want to become a programmer.
1045–1145 am From Software Engineer to Software Leader – Erik Birkfeld and Etienne de Bruin (7CTOs)
As we build software, design products, or architect systems, we gain technical experience. Before we know it, we inherit leadership positions and are looked upon to guide a team. Join MindTouch and learn how to navigate your growth as a leader and how you’ll have more fun than ever, dealing with complex team dynamics.
12:15–1:15 pm Building an Engineering-First Culture – Steve Bjorg, MindTouch CTO and Co-Founder
MindTouch takes its engineering culture super seriously and we stake our company future on it. Whether it be mission statements or career sprints, we look to build not only a great product but also to make sure that our engineers grow every step along the way. In this session, we share what we believe has made us successful in building a great engineering culture and we hope to inspire others to do the same.
1:30–2:30 pm Cloudy with a Chance of Microservices – Corey Coto
Microservices does not have to turn your system into a complex mess of unique snowflakes. Standardization will empower your development teams to safely and rapidly innovate. Hear from MindTouch how our standardized microservice platform is designed and the lessons learned along the way.
3:15–4:15 pm Finding the Needle in the Cloud Stack: Maximize Uptime and Sleep Time – Omii Moore
Do you fumble for an answer when asked: “How is our system doing?” Do you fear every text and call on the weekend? Is “on-call” a dirty word? Being able to quickly determine the status of your cloud service is often a more complex answer than if it simply responds to requests. The Site Reliability team at MindTouch will share techniques to properly track server metrics and use them to preempt emergencies while in the office, not at home.
4:30–5:30 pm Serverless in San Diego: Building and Shipping with AWS Lambda – Juan Torres and Steve Roberts, Senior Software Developer for Amazon
What does it take to fully embrace using serverless to develop your product? Performance, visibility, development, and deployment lifecycle are the things that you need to take care of In this talk we will tell you how MindTouch does it.
5:45–930pm Special Hackathon w/ AWS (RSVP required HERE!)
This is a hands-on meetup suitable for advanced developers, passionate beginners, and curious minds! Each meeting is focused on exploring a specific technology by building a service with it. This is a San Diego StartUp Week special with Amazon helping run the group.
